Does the RG3 Excitement Trump What We Saw a Few Years Back?

| August 11, 2012 | 1 Comment

Every morning I’m quickly reminded of the excitement surrounding RG3 when I turn on my iPad and he’s gracing the front wallpaper. I then hop on my Twitter and hes a mainstay in conversations daily. Ever since the draft this city has been buzzing, the draft was unlike anything I’ve ever seen in DC, it was insanity.

If you were to ask some Redskins fans they’ll immediately tell you this is the most excited they’ve ever been about the Redskins because we FINALLY have a franchise quarterback. But is that true, is this the most excited Redskins fans have been?

Lets ignore the Super Bowl seasons for obvious reasons, even in the last 10-years has there been a more exciting time period to be a Skins fan, or are we just prisoners of the moment focusing on the here and now forgetting all else?

I go back to 2004.  Remember when Joe Gibbs, Washington Redskins coaching “Messiah” returned to the sidelines.  Remember when the fans lined  Ashburn Drive to welcome Coach back to town and chanted Gibbs, Gibbs, Gibbs like there was no tomorrow.  Remember everyone booking their Super Bowl tickets because there was no way Coach Gibbs wasn’t going to be able to get us back to the big game.  Remember Gibbs bringing back his guys: Bugel and Co.. Remember when Coach brought to town the games most explosive young running back Clinton Portis, giving us an offensive weapon we hadn’t seen in years.  Remember when Clinton Portis, in Coach Gibbs first game back in DC, took the first play from scrimmage to the house on that Sunday afternoon and everyone in Redskins Nation looked to the sky and saw the sun shining down on us.  That was a GREAT moment.  Fedex Field was ELECTRIC that afternoon.  You remember it right?

Think about it… had Obama been on the scene back then, Gibbs face would’ve been on all the “Hope” posters all around town.

So when you step back, does todays excitement with RG3 surpass the feelings you had in 2004 when Gibbs returned and brought in his guys?

So where do you stand?  Were you more excited in 2004 when Gibbs returned and we could all smell the glory days making their way back to DC or does what were witnessing today trump all of that?

I was more excited back in 2000 when we signed Jeff George, Deion Sanders, Bruce Smith, Mark Carrier, Adrian Murrell, etc. Looking back, they were all way past their prime, but... I was thinking Superbowl. I'm not thinking that right now.
