My Favorite Olympic Moment(s): The 2008 Beijing Olympics: Swimming Mens 4x100m Freestyle Relay Final (video)
Everyone has moment from the Olympics that’ll never forget. Whether it’s the “Miracle On Ice” in 1980, or Mary Lou Retton scoring two (floor, vault) perfect 10′s at the 1984 games everyone has a moment that they’ll remember forever. For me and fellow BHR host Kevin Eaton one of those moments happened in 2008. With one gold medal in the books Michael Phelps was just beginning his quest for the 8 gold medals when the Men’s 4x100m Freestyle Relay Final came around. What happened next was Olympics in all it’s glory. With the Americans trailing and 6’5” French swimmer Alain Bernard swimming anchor it looked as all hope was lost. Problem is no one told Jason Lezak that. What happened next is what the Olympics are all about.
The four Americans in order: Michael Phelps, Garrett Weber-Gale, Cullen Jones and Jason Lezak
(For those of you who just want to see Lezak’s swim skip ahead to 4:28)
