To the surprise of no one in the DMV the Washington Wizards waived Andray Blatche and designated him as the teams amnesty player. Each team in the NBA was given a one-time amnesty provision in which a player can be waived and the contract is removed from the teams salary cap. In layman’s terms they just paid Blatche $23 million to go away. Think of it as the greatest severance package ever.
In a press release GM Ernie Grunfeld said about Blatche: “Andray did not figure into our future plans, and using the amnesty provision is a mutually beneficial opportunity for us to pat ways, We will be able to continue to develop our core group of young players, blend in the solid veterans we have acquired and maintain financial flexibility while Andray will be able to get a fresh start with another team. We wish him the best moving forward”
Ok a couple things about the above quote:
1) How quickly things change? Just two years ago Ernie said this about the signing of Blatche “Andray and JaVale are two pieces that we feel can solidify our frontcourt for years to come and extending their contracts certainly fits in with our long-term plan of rebuilding this team with a core of young, talented players” whoops… In less than 2 years Blatche when form a young talented player to disposable
2) “mutually beneficial for us to part ways” – Andray just got $23 million and now gets to sign another contract with any other team he wants. While Uncle Ted has to cut the check. Andray won this one…
3) I wish somewhere in this press release Ernie said “I really screwed the pooch on this one. Like I royally f*cked up. My bad. Won’t happen again”. Instead he’s talking like he wasn’t the one who gave Blatche the extension in the first place.
In the end this is a move that needed to happen for both sides. DC had grown tired of Andray, and Andray had grown tired of DC. The biggest loser in all of this is Stadium Nightclub…
Right back at you Andray….
