Hall of Fame or Championship Ring? Which would you choose?

| July 5, 2012 | 3 Comments

During LT’s recent retirement speech he said a comment that has been widely discussed, picked apart and analyzed  around the country.  When asked about most likely being a Hall of Famer or having a chance to have won a Super Bowl, which one he would prefer if he could only choose one, LT went on to say:

“Hall of Fame player without a ring, because you’ve got to sacrifice so much individually just to be good,” Tomlinson said. “They draft you individually and you’ve got to back them up and make them right. I think at the end of the day, even though I didn’t win a Super Bowl ring, I felt like I backed them up for drafting me. I backed up the San Diego Chargers for picking me with the fifth pick.” – Tomlinson

Is this the right mindset to have as a player?  Does making the Hall of Fame, trump winning a championship if you only get one option?  The Ball Hogs were split on this subject as they participated in a spirited debate on this exact subject during a recent recording.  Take a listen… which side of this discussion do you find yourself.

But dont all players wake up everyday with the goal of winning a championship? Thats what keeps athletes coming back out of retirement and playing years longer than they should, the chase for the championship (ring), not to pad stats for HOF credentials. So after they retire to say, the HOF means more, is only said because that person never won his main goal, so of course he's going to slant it as being second-fiddle. LT said, he felt his HOF career "validated" the Chargers decision to draft him, but whats funny is when the Chargers drafted him they said, we believe LT will be able to lead us to a championship (not HOF). You see all conversations on this start and end with CHAMPIONSHIPS. Thats first priortiy and EVERYTHING comes after that.

I would have to go with Hall of Fame. I think there are thousands of Superbowl champions that nobody has ever heard of, and only a hand ful of Hall of Famers that we can say the same for. A Hall of Fame player is one that has displayed dominance in what he does. He has consistently been one of the best players in the league, and has had copious amounts of individual success. What we are forgetting here is that most Hall of Fame players are NOT selfish. Their individual success can usually be attributed to a team effort, and in many cases, the teams success can be attributed to their individual effort. At the end of the day, a player that has bounced from practice squad to practice squad can end up with a ring. Only the most elite players earn a spot in the Hall.
